No More Linux? Bah, I’ve got VMWare!
I’ve come to the decision that my laptop is going to be running Windows for the foreseeable future. I’ve noticed it’s running a lot cooler now, which I figure is due to another ACPI issue. Originally, the issue was no sound, but now that I’ve noticed the temperature difference, I think I might stay where I’m at. I’ve already installed most of the protective measures in Windows, but my next step is to get VMWare loaded and get a Kubuntu VMWare image, that way I can still have my Linux and not worry about sound or overheating. Gaming won’t be an issue now, either, since I won’t need to dual boot or install Wine. Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like Windows, but in this case, it’s the best solution for the time being.
On my desktop, Kubuntu is running great. I dual boot there with XP, and I don’t have any intentions of moving to the Windows/VMWare combination I have on my laptop. Why? It runs fine, doesn’t run hot and it works. Laptops are a different breed of machine, and being such beasts, there’s bound to be problems. The heat issue is a little more important than the sound issue. The machine wasn’t overheating, but it was running pretty hot, even while idle. I have the option of resizing the Windows partition and trying a distro later, but I think for now I’m just going to wait out a kernel release or two before trying it again in something other than a virtual machine.

I’m taking the opposite approach. I’m gonna get a minimal install of Xubuntu going, then install VMware Server and run some other flavors of linux and windows in virtual machines.

Yeah, hopefully a solution to my sound and heat issues comes up; I’d really like to run Linux as the main OS and have Windows as a guest. For now, though, my setup does what I need :)
