“Shut up, or I’ll kill you!”
There are at least three sure-fire ways to incite a flamewar on any linux forum:
Gnome vs. KDE
This is by far one of the biggest. The choice of desktop you use comes down to personal preference, and one really doesn’t seem better than the other. They both accomplish the same thing, in different ways. Usually though, you get the following kinds of responses:
“Gnome sucks, it’s too minimal and not configurable”
“KDE sucks. It’s bloated, uses too much RAM and has too much crap”
And of course:
“They both suck, Fluxbox rules!”
I bounce back and forth between KDE and Fluxbox. Those are my two favorites. I’ve tried Gnome, and I feel more in control and at home in KDE and Fluxbox.
Vim vs. Emacs
This is another big one. The Vi(m) vs. Emacs debate has been around forever, and here again, personal preference would be the main reasoning to use whichever one you use, however, Emacs does have a slew of other options available. I’ve tried both, and I’m currently trying to learn emacs for a change.
Distro wars
This rounds out the top 3, the distribution wars. You know, the whole “Gentoo is better than Ubuntu” and things of that nature. One more time, it comes down to what you feel comfortable using. I’ve used a lot of distributions in my time (ask the guys from CPLUG), and each one has it’s own set of qualities and weaknesses. The two I like the most are Ubuntu and Gentoo, with Ubuntu being my current choice.
