Modular Xorg
Gentoo stabilized modular Xorg in portage last week, and I found out the hard way when I went to perform an upgrade. 600 packages, uhm, ouch. So, a brief visit to Gentoo’s site, in particular this document, and I was off and running again. 101 packages vs. 600. Xorg takes a lot less time to compile now since I don’t have to compile all modules and drivers that I’ll never need. Once upgraded, X came right back up and it’s running along just as it was. A bonus is that a problem I was having with amaroK working in Fluxbox (i.e. amarok would cause X to peg the CPUs at 100% and lock me up) appears to have disappeared now, so I can revert back to Flux instead of KDE. Granted, I love KDE, but I also like being in control of my menu structure. I realize I can do that to a point with KDE’s menu editor, but there’s something about just opening a config file in vim and having at it.
